Scientific Program

Brief list of scientific goals of the MITP Scientific Program

  • Overall goal:
Bring together leading physicists and mathematicians to explore the mathematical foundations of the recent Quantum Gravity Conjectures in the context of string theory, specifically:

  • Achieve a better understanding of degeneration limits in moduli spaces of string compactifications and their relation to the Swampland Distance Conjecture, e.g. using methods in algebraic geometry such as the theory of Limiting Mixed Hodge structures

  • Analyse the role of BPS state counting and its connection to enumerative geometry, mirror symmetry, and modular forms in connection with the Completeness Conjecture and the Weak Gravity Conjecture

  • Systematically explore the boundaries of the string landscape in the non-perturbative regime via F-theory

  • Extend the analysis of the Swampland Conjectures to the topical realm of M-theory compactifications on G2 manifolds
