Description
The upgrade of the ALICE Time Projection Chamber (TPC) is an essential
part of the experiment's preparation for the LHC Run 3 starting in
2021. The production of the new readout detectors has been practically
completed; the detectors will be installed in the TPC in a few months
from now. The Gas Electron Multiplier technology, on which they are
based, will enable us to operate the TPC in a continuous mode,
sampling the full rate of lead-lead collisions offered by the LHC. In
my presentation I will briefly describe the design and production of
the chambers, and review the physics prospects opening in Run 3.
